    An Accelerating 3D Image Reconstruction System Based on the Level-of-Detail Algorithm

    This paper proposes a research of An Accelerating 3D Image Reconstruction System Based on the Level-of-Detail Algorithm and combines 3D graphic application interfaces, such as DirectX3D and OpenCV to reconstruct the 3D imaging system for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and adds Level of Detail (LOD) algorithm to the system. The system uses the volume rendering method to perform 3D reconstruction for brain imaging. The process, which is based on the level of detail algorithm that converts and formulates functions from differing levels of detail and scope, significantly reduces the complexity of required processing and computation, under the premises of maintaining drawing quality. To validate the system's efficiency enhancement on brain imaging reconstruction, this study operates the system on various computer platforms, and uses multiple sets of data to perform rendering and 3D object imaging reconstruction, the results of which are then verified and compared

    Use of ecstasy and other psychoactive substances among school-attending adolescents in Taiwan: national surveys 2004–2006

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>With the backdrop of a global ecstasy epidemic, this study sought to examine the trend, correlates, and onset sequence of ecstasy use among adolescents in Taiwan, where a well-established gateway drug such as marijuana is much less popular.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A multistage probability survey of school-attending adolescents in grades 7, 9, 10, and 12, aged 11–19 years, was conducted in 2004, 2005, and 2006. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire elicited response rates ranging from 94.3% to 96.6%. The sample sizes were 18232 respondents in 2004, 17986 in 2005, and 17864 in 2006.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In terms of lifetime prevalence and incidence, ecstasy and ketamine by and large appeared as the first and second commonly used illegal drugs, respectively, among middle (grades 7 and 9) and high school students (grades 10 and 12) during the 3-year survey period; however, this order was reversed in the middle school-aged students starting in 2006. Having sexual experience, tobacco use, and betel nut use were factors consistently associated with the onset of ecstasy use across years. The majority of ecstasy users had been involved in polydrug use, such as the use of ketamine (41.4%–53.5%), marijuana (12.7%–18.7%), and methamphetamine (4.2%–9.5%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>From 2004 to 2006, a decline was noted in the prevalence and incidence rate of ecstasy, a leading illegal drug used by school-attending adolescents in Taiwan since the early 2000s. The emerging ketamine use trend may warrant more attention in the future.</p

    Women with endometriosis have higher comorbidities: Analysis of domestic data in Taiwan

    AbstractEndometriosis, defined by the presence of viable extrauterine endometrial glands and stroma, can grow or bleed cyclically, and possesses characteristics including a destructive, invasive, and metastatic nature. Since endometriosis may result in pelvic inflammation, adhesion, chronic pain, and infertility, and can progress to biologically malignant tumors, it is a long-term major health issue in women of reproductive age. In this review, we analyze the Taiwan domestic research addressing associations between endometriosis and other diseases. Concerning malignant tumors, we identified four studies on the links between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, one on breast cancer, two on endometrial cancer, one on colorectal cancer, and one on other malignancies, as well as one on associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome, one on links with migraine headache, three on links with pelvic inflammatory diseases, four on links with infertility, four on links with obesity, four on links with chronic liver disease, four on links with rheumatoid arthritis, four on links with chronic renal disease, five on links with diabetes mellitus, and five on links with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). The data available to date support that women with endometriosis might be at risk of some chronic illnesses and certain malignancies, although we consider the evidence for some comorbidities to be of low quality, for example, the association between colon cancer and adenomyosis/endometriosis. We still believe that the risk of comorbidity might be higher in women with endometriosis than that we supposed before. More research is needed to determine whether women with endometriosis are really at risk of these comorbidities

    The genetic architecture of type 2 diabetes

    The genetic architecture of common traits, including the number, frequency, and effect sizes of inherited variants that contribute to individual risk, has been long debated. Genome-wide association studies have identified scores of common variants associated with type 2 diabetes, but in aggregate, these explain only a fraction of heritability. To test the hypothesis that lower-frequency variants explain much of the remainder, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia performed whole genome sequencing in 2,657 Europeans with and without diabetes, and exome sequencing in a total of 12,940 subjects from five ancestral groups. To increase statistical power, we expanded sample size via genotyping and imputation in a further 111,548 subjects. Variants associated with type 2 diabetes after sequencing were overwhelmingly common and most fell within regions previously identified by genome-wide association studies. Comprehensive enumeration of sequence variation is necessary to identify functional alleles that provide important clues to disease pathophysiology, but large-scale sequencing does not support a major role for lower-frequency variants in predisposition to type 2 diabetes

    New genetic loci link adipose and insulin biology to body fat distribution.

    Body fat distribution is a heritable trait and a well-established predictor of adverse metabolic outcomes, independent of overall adiposity. To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of body fat distribution and its molecular links to cardiometabolic traits, here we conduct genome-wide association meta-analyses of traits related to waist and hip circumferences in up to 224,459 individuals. We identify 49 loci (33 new) associated with waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (BMI), and an additional 19 loci newly associated with related waist and hip circumference measures (P < 5 × 10(-8)). In total, 20 of the 49 waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI loci show significant sexual dimorphism, 19 of which display a stronger effect in women. The identified loci were enriched for genes expressed in adipose tissue and for putative regulatory elements in adipocytes. Pathway analyses implicated adipogenesis, angiogenesis, transcriptional regulation and insulin resistance as processes affecting fat distribution, providing insight into potential pathophysiological mechanisms

    Revisiting the Relationship between Attitudes toward Abortion and Capital Punishment

    Previous research has shown that public opinion on abortion is not a simply a dichotomy of pro-life and pro-choice. Instead, there appears to be three general attitudes: absolutist (opposing abortion in all cases, including rape), situationalist (opposing abortion for all cases except “hard” cases such as rape and incest), and pro-choice. Previous studies have also shown little or no correlation between attitudes towards abortion and capital punishment. The present study hypothesizes that those who take an absolutist stance on abortion will oppose capital punishment based on the value of life while situationalists will support capital punishment based on the value of responsibility. The results show support among those who are 23 and older, but no support that are 22 and younger. Implications are discussed.Stephenson, Larry and Tien-Tsung Lee.     Who Can I Trust in a Scary World? An Examination of the Objects of Trust, Information Sources and Social Distancing Intention Amid COVID-19

    Trust is a central construct of social research. While numerous studies have investigated trust as either a dependent or independent variable, little attention has been paid to its relationship with health-related behaviors in the context of a public health crisis. How trust in different entities influences people’s social distancing intention is therefore an important question that merits academic scrutiny. Moreover, the relationship between trust and social distancing intention cannot be well understood without an account of the information environment. As previous studies have reached a consensus about the limited effects of information exposure on individual outcomes, this research focuses on possible moderating effects. Results show that information exposure, no matter via interpersonal or media sources, has no direct effects on behavioral intention. Rather, risk communication serves as a moderator of the relationship between trust and social distancing intention

    Mixed Volume Computation, A Revisit

    The superiority of the dynamic enumeration of all mixed cells suggested by T. Mizutani et al. for the mixed volume computation over the existing methods was reported in [15]. In this article, we embed the idea of dynamic enumeration into our original algorithm for the mixed volume computation presented in [7], and a new algorithm is developed by employing both primal and dual simplex algorithms. Illustrated by the numerical results, our new algorithm improves the speed of the code in [15] by a substantial margin.

    RankRev: aMatlab package for computing the numerical rank and updating/downdating

    The numerical rank determination frequently occurs in matrix computation when the conventional exact rank of a hidden matrix is desired to be recovered. This paper presents a Matlab package RankRev that implements two efficient algorithms for computing the numerical rank and numerical subspaces of a matrix along with updating/downdating capabilities for making adjustment to the results when a row or column is inserted/deleted. The package and the underlying algorithms are accurate, reliable, and much more efficient than the singular value decomposition when the matrix is of low rank or low nullity
